Nagarhole National Park

The Nagarahole National Park, 644 sq km in size, is situated in the Coorg and Mysore districts of Karnataka State in Southern India. This National Park is named after a small river, Nagarahole (meaning 'Snake streams' in Kannada) that meanders through the centre of the park, flowing eastward into the Taraka Reservoir on the edge of the Park, and continuing as the Taraka River before joining the Kabini. Nagarahole National Park now renamed as Rajiv Ghandi National park.

Huge herds of elephants walk down to Nagarahole in the summer months, which is an excellent time to watch them. Over 300 bird species have been reported here, including some of the rare ones like Blue Face Malkhoa, White-cheeked Barbet and Nilgiri Flycatcher. The Short Eared and Oriental Scops Owl can been seen at night as they come out to prey.

A wide variety of fauna with carnivores like Tiger, Leopard, Wild Dog, Jungle Cat, Striped Hyena and the Jackal are found in large number Herbivores like Gaur, Axis Deer, Sambar, Indian Muntjac, Mouse Deer, Four-horned Antelope, Wild Boar, Crested Porcupine, Black-naped Hare are found here.
